Jesus, Friend of Sinners

This weekend the Grammy’s were on, and I didn’t watch because I was completely unaware they were on. But by Monday the amount of tweets and Facebook comments I saw, it was like I had basically watched them. There were some things that I read that really alarmed me. The worse were from some Christian people. The amount of judgement I read was literally so painful to my heart that it hurt. It hurt not because I love the Grammy’s or defend them but because I could only imagine Jesus saying:

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.” Matthew 7:1-5

Why do we think this bubble of Christianity we have created is so much holier than the outside world? The “secular” world.  Didn’t God say in Genesis 1:31
“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.”

And in 1 Timothy 4:4 it also says:
“For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,”

I don’t know about you but those verses pretty much say that EVERYTHING he made was good. Even those people up on a stage that you may judge so much, he see's good in them. Good thing Christ isn’t like us huh? Everyone would be gone; crucified to say the least. I can imagine Jesus just sitting watching a Grammy’s show and just smiling saying “Ha they have a lovely voice Father, hear that, that’s talent. But Father I forgive them for not praising me the way they praise themselves, but I still love them”. You see, that’s the Jesus I love, the non-judgmental, sin forgiving, sinner lover. He’s dangerous, that grace is scandalous. I bet if he was around in 2014 walking around in homeless shelters, prostitute houses, and loving the sin out of the people you judge the most on your TVs, you would be terrified of that man and your kids would not be allowed to even look at him. As Jefferson Bethke put it in his book Jesus>Religion (which I HIGHLY recommend):

"We’ve lost the real Jesus—or at least exchanged him for a newer, safer, sanitized, ineffectual one. We’ve created a Christian subculture that comes with its own set of customs, rules, rituals, paradigms, and products that are nowhere near the rugged, revolutionary faith of biblical Christianity. In our subculture Jesus would have never been crucified—he’s too nice."

We created this nice image of Jesus, the one that would never even see a “secular” show. Yet he would probably be there in person just to spread his love out. That's why He is one of a kind. But do not misunderstand me, I am not defending sin but I’m defending the people that God, our God, made. Because we so easily forget where he has taken us from, from where he has saved us, let’s not forget. I have been one to easily forget where he has taken me from and He is sure to humble me right back down. The best you can do is turn off your TV and pray, not run to the nearest computer and profess your hatred towards the music industry or shows.Yes God is a jealous God, so He will judge, not you. This isn't only with award shows or artist. We judge everyday of our lives; that girl that dresses so ungodly, or that boy with that tattoo, that one lady that worships too loud, those homosexuals down the street or someone who just doesn't live in the correct way in your eyes.

"People are not the enemy. Satan is the enemy that has fooled people into the lives they live and things they do"

You are only meant to come to this earth to love and spread the Gospel. Not love those who believe in what you believe and act like you do.

Good thing I follow a Jesus that loves sinners or else I’d be in big trouble.

With all the love in the world, Diana.
P.s. I hope you take the time to watch this video and listen to the profound words. It has impacted my life immensely. If you don't have time to listen, I have placed the lyrics down bellow :)

"Jesus, Friend Of Sinners"
Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away
We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth's become so hard to see
The world is on their way to You but they're tripping over me
Always looking around but never looking up I'm so double minded
A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

Jesus, friend of sinners, the one who's writing in the sand
Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands
Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees
Nobody knows what we're for only what we're against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast
For the leper and the lame; they're the reason that You came
Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast
But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

'Cause You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks Yours

And I was the lost cause and I was the outcast
You died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

You can't attend worship, You have to live it

So we've reached the end of our series on  overcoming fear, and today we will be talking about our final principle: worship. Now if I were to ask you what worship meant to you, I would probably get answers along the lines of "singing" or lifting up your hands" and many more. It's true, this is worship, but it's only a part of worship. I think that overtime we've lost sight of what it truly means to worship the most High. In the word it tells us in John 4:23-24

"But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.  For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

I think that to be a true worshiper of God, it has to become a lifestyle. Worship isn't just singing a pretty song, closing your eyes and lifting up your hands. It's not always about music. Growing up, this is basically what I thought worship was all about. That time before the preaching to get people pumped. As I grew older, I began to realize (thank God I realized) that it is so much more than that. Worship is the words you speak, the way you live, the things you do. I came to realize that EVERYTHING we do is meant to honor the Father in a spirit of worship towards Him. In spirit and in truth means not just on the outside, but also on the inside. What are your thoughts and feelings? How are you treating your friends, family, I'm even going to go out on a limb and say how are you treating those who you aren't the fondest of? This is ALL a reflection of your worship to God. Something that I compare this to is when God tells us to honor our parents. Now by honoring them that means that you will speak well of them, and you will love them and care for them. Now just imagine God and how you worship Him. Are you living in a way that honors Him?

Ive learned that if you don't know how to love, you can't worship. How can you love and worship someone you can't see in the physical and not love someone who is right next to you. It just doesn't work out. Ask God to teach you how to love and to worship Him. Its a beautiful process, and it leads you straight to His heart.

Something else I've come to notice is that worship really does set the atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to come and take control. I believe that in true worship, you have to surrender all that you are to God, and just be open to Him molding you into the person that He wants you to be. That means giving up your fears, your issues, the good in you. That means that you have to surrender the parts of your life that you don't want Him to touch.

A passage that reflects a lot about worship and music is in Isaiah 30:32. It says :

"Every stroke the Lord lays on them with his punishing club will be to the music of timbrels and harps, as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm."

I find this verse interesting because God paints us a beautiful picture here. This is something that I heard in a preaching by Bill Johnson, and it really changed my attitude towards worship through music. To sum up that verse and to make it easier, it pretty much says God will defeat the enemy and beat them to the ground to the music of timbrels and harps. I can't find another word to describe this situation but the word awesome. God will defeat your enemy, your fears, your sorrows through your worship. The more you worship the bigger of a beating your enemy and affliction will get; whatever it may be. This is why worship is a place of surrender. A place to trust the Lord with everything that is worrying you or hurting you. The battle has already been won for you, all God asks for you to do is to worship Him and believe. It's time to let God take control of that fear and let Him do His thing. Worship IS a time for change and a time of victory. Worship in all that you do and you will see God's victorious hand work in your life. Never underestimate the power that is worship,  because it is a tool that God has given us to overcome and be victorious in His name. Its time to go back to the heart of worship.

Strong enough to know you need help, Brave enough to ask for it.

Alright, so number three on our list of constructing a relationship with God on a more trusting level is counsel and fellowship. If there is something us human beings like to do it's do things on our own. I am completely guilty of this, as I am sure you are as well. In our “Fear... A trust issue? post” it was said “I'm almost 100% sure that God put people on this planet so that we could help each other out and flee from isolation” I believe that if this weren't true then God would have never made Eve.
"The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." – Genesis 2:18"
He would have thought Adam was completely fine on his own and he didn't need any help, but guess what? God knew he did, and I’m sure if the first man on this planet needed someone else’s help, you do too.  It is amazing to know that we are put on this earth to help one another. The older I get the more I see that humans like to associate asking for counsel or help with weakness. It’s one of the main reasons why so many of us struggle in our prayer life. We simply don’t like asking for help. It makes us think we are not in control of the situation, it ultimately hurts our ego. The Son of God came down from His heavenly realm to become one of us, which in itself is humbling. He came down knowing fully that he could accomplish everything he wanted on His own, but He decided not to; he decided to join forces with twelve other men.
“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you “- John 15:15

This earth was not meant for us to walk in isolation, just take a look around you. People are EVERYWHERE. If you have a problem, first go to God because he knows your afflictions and tribulations, then find someone you trust and who is in a more spiritually mature state to discuss what is afflicting you. We are made in the image of God and He gave us holy discernment. God may want to speak to you through your peers but you are too busy trying to keep up your wall of “I’m okay I need no one’s help”. You might be missing out on what God wants to speak to you.

This blog is solely made for the Glory of God and because of friendship. It was constructed after a week of counsel that we both had. It was one of those weeks that one of us was completely confused, the other one stepped up to the plate and helped. Now imagine if the one that was having troubles that week decided to keep her problems to herself, maybe this blog would have never happened and one of us would probably be even more afflicted than ever.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?  Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (Fun fact: Our blog name was named after this verse after the week of intense fellowship and counsel)

That’s the beauty of asking for help, to know that you can lift each other up when one is not well. We have to get over ourselves and our ego. Seriously, the only thing that your ego does to you is put pride in your heart. This one goes out for our men out there, IT IS NOT A WEAKNESS TO ASK FOR HELP. Godly counsel is good, people are good, help is good. There is no need for you to suffer alone when God has placed people in your life to come lend you a helping hand. If you are going through financial crisis, tell someone, you never know who got a word that day from God to bless someone financially. If you are in depression please seek help and Godly counsel.  Depression is not meant to be battled alone, you need people around you to give you encouragement and remind you how beautiful life is. If you are living in fear, run to God and run to the people that he has placed in your life to be spiritual warriors. At the end of the day we are all going to need someone to lean on, to help us, to counsel us, and show us that the world isn't so grey.
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”- 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Knowing the Bible and knowing the Author are two very different things

So in continuation, to building  a strong relationship with God we all have to make an effort to the the second step: reading the word! This is probably the step that is the most important yet challenging for people because the bible can be complicated and difficult to understand. I know that in my life, reading the bible was something that didn't catch my interest all that much. I didn't understand it, I ultimately thought it was the most boring thing I could have ever laid my eyes on. Naturally, this is the reality that most people face when it comes to reading the word of God. This really has to change! It's pretty sad seeing how lost this generation can be when they have the answers right in front of them. We tend to ask where is God, why can't I hear Him? Why doesn't He answer me? And I can only imagine Him standing in front of you scratching his head and pointing to the bible. These are His words, promises and answers to you. The bible is something that I've learned has an answer to everything and I mean EVERYTHING. But for you to obtain these answers you just have to take the time to read it. And I mean really read it, not just skimming through it 1, 2, 3 and you're done. I mean setting a time and forgetting about everything else in this world that worries you and meditating on HIS word for you. Thinking about what you're reading, and applying every promise and every word for comfort to your life. His word is meant to change you, and it will.

"Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do." -Joshua 1:8

It literally it says that if you meditate on the word, meaning going deeper into it's meaning and OBEY...that's a big one, that you will succeed in ALL that you do. I don't know about you but I want to succeed in everything I do. God gave the world the key to succeeding. How amazing is that? But how can we know of Gods promises for our lives if we can't spend time getting to know Him in the word that He himself has given us. I think its time that we develop a hunger and a passion for the word. Not in a way that is selfish, as to only acquire things such as blessing and success, but to really get to know and fall in LOVE with our Creator. Everything else will fall into place if you seek God. One of the things that has helped me fall in love with the word of God is starting by the book of Matthew. Reading all about Jesus, there's something about falling in love with the Son that makes you want to go back and read about times before the Son. It honestly makes you want to know why they call him Son of David and all of his descents. Reading the gospel will open a whole new desire to reading times before Jesus. You can relate to the Old Testament believe it or not, they were waiting for a messiah to come, aren't we waiting for Him to come back too?

"Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world."- James 4:8

So if you really make the decision that you want to be closer to God, and that you want to go deeper in your relationship with Him, I encourage you to fall in love with the word. Let there be a passion ignited within you that desires to know more.

My people perish from a lack of knowledge. - Hosea 4: 6

Prayer - The World's Greastest Wireless Connection

On our last post we touched about overcoming fear and there were four steps to overcoming fear:
1)Prayer
2)Reading the word
3)Counsel
4)Worship

Well it's time to dig deeper into those individual aspects that make up our foundation for a great relationship with God. So let's get started with number 1: Prayer.
I think it's time that we start being honest with God. Growing up I had this image of God, an entity up in the clouds just ruling over people. In Sunday school I was taught to pray to God but not to communicate with Him. Let me tell you, those two things are completely different. I think many of us grow up with a notion that God has bigger problems out in the world than ours, so we don't express ourselves to Him and when we do,we start doing what the prodigal son did before coming home to his father. Rehearse his speech of forgiveness in hopes of being well received.

"I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father." Luke 15:18

How many times do you catch yourself formatting and scripting your prayers in your head and as soon as we get into "prayer mode" we start reciting this monotone rehearsed speech that God has already heard?! I think it's time that we start being honest in our prayer life, that we open up more, that we scream and cry. That we express and communicate our thoughts, our loneliness, fears, happiness and sadness to the Holy Spirit WITHOUT rehearsing them before hand because you know what? He already knows what's in your heart and on your mind. I also want to add that it doesn't matter where you are when you communicate with your Creator! Religion has made talking to your Father such a tradition that if we are not kneeling or in a church most feel like they aren't really praying. That makes prayer seem like a chore and to me, it's almost like having a specific place where I can talk to my parents, imagine that you are only allowed to talk to your parents in the kitchen and nowhere else! How crazy does that sound?! And we actually do this with our Heavenly Father! As if He is not everywhere! He is omniscient; all-knowing, all-wise, all-seeing, he is everywhere. It's time to be honest with God anywhere and everywhere! It's time to start communicating with Him at work, at school, in the car, even on the bus. It's time to close your eyes in the middle of a chaotic world and say "HELP" and it is essential to start understanding that prayer is not just holding your hands in front of your face and saying something out of Psalms. It is saying exactly what you feel, it is raw emotion, it is freedom. Jesus cried out to the Father:

"And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” )." -Mark 15:34

Do you see that? He CRIED out, he had no shame to cry out to His father even when he knew that the story of his resurrection was greater and better than his death. But in the moment He felt alone and afraid and He made sure the Father knew, because He knew that the Father would deliver him from all fear and death. So why do we try to bottle up our feelings? Scream them out, ask for Him to show up when you don't feel Him! And when you actually start a real conversation with your God that's when He will say "Finally, it took you long enough to be honest with me, now let's get to work" and your redemption story will be far more beautiful than your trials, and it all starts with a decision. A decision to be open and honest with your prayers.

Fear....a Trust Issue?

I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one out there who's been afraid. Afraid of a multitude of things in this lifetime. Personally, I was so hooked on fear that it was starting to dominate over me, not letting me live my life the way I should. Now that's taking it too far I think. Of course, nobody's perfect and I'm still afraid of things such as public speaking (everyone's usually surprised by this one), but its something that I trust God will deliver me from slowly, but surely.
But if there's something that I've learned over time it's that fear is a trust issue. Yeah, that sounds kind of weird right? Let me explain. I've come to realize that when you are afraid and fearful, it is because you aren't trusting God with the issue. There's this little thing called having faith, which is something that lacks if you are allowing fear to control your life.To overcome fear is to surrender it all to God. Like it says in  Philippians 4:6-7:
"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
If you allow God to take control of your fear then what makes you think He won't? He will give you that overwhelming peace that surpasses all of our understanding. Who doesn't want that?! I mean really? But we have to understand that there are implications to this. God wants you to do your part too! Don't just wait around for Him to make your feelings of fear magically disappear. It doesn't work that way. You have to make an effort yourself to be more trusting of God, meaning you have to seek Him, and get to know Him for who He really is; a loving Father!

There are a few things that I think really help you to overcome fear.

1) Prayer
If you haven't experienced the power of prayer, I encourage you to go deeper. Dedicate time to this because prayer is the key in this battle. God promises us in Matthew 7.7 :
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you."
Put it into practice and be amazed by Gods glory! I dare you.

2) Read the Word
This one seems like a no brainer.  Read the word and you can really learn a lot about Jesus and the Father. But something that I've come to realize is that the enemy has NO new tricks. So recognizing the attack of the enemy against your life gives you an advantage and an opportunity to use the word to overcome.

3) Counsel
Put up your hand if you've ever been that type of person who thought they could do everything on their own without needing anyone's help. Yeah I was that person for far too long. I'm almost 100% sure that God put people on this planet so that we could help each other out and flee from isolation. So tell someone you trust about what you're going through; someone who is on higher spiritual grounds than you are. I promise you, God will use them to give you words of comfort and wisdom.

4) Worship
Chains are broken during worship.  Its a time where you can completely let go of whats bothering you, and wholeheartedly give it up to God. Worship is a time to set an atmosphere to let the Holy Spirit do His work. Surrender it all and trust God!

Essentially what I want is for you all to walk in the freedom that Jesus has given us. His love overcomes all things, and He is GREATER than any and every fear that exists. So why not go out on a limb and surrender all fear within you up to Jesus? There's really nothing to lose. All you do is gain! Learn to trust God with everything that you are, every inch of your being; all fears included, and walk out in the love that is Christ. I pray that God will set you free of all fear that is trying to dominate over your life, and that the love and peace of God may just overflow in your lives!

Christmas is over, Are you still giving?

Why is it so hard for people to give? Why is it even harder for us Christians to give? As Christians we think that just serving at church in those four walls is enough to get that golden ticket to the pearly gates, and a "Christian of the month" title. It's not just all Christians though, the world is selfish with their earnings, love and spirituality. We pass that homeless person on the street and don't give them that toonie we have in our coat pocket. Worse yet, we wouldn't even dare give them a smile or even eye contact. I say that because I've been that person who doesn't give, and I'm sure you have been too. I always found it funny how when you don't want to give to someone you try your best not to make eye contact. When you pass that homeless person or that coworker that always needs something, you try your hardest to look away or look down. You know why that is? Because once you make eye contact that person becomes real, those eyes have value, a life and since Jesus is the giver of life and rescues those who are in need, and Jesus is in you and you are made in His image, once you make eye contact with life, your soul WANTS to give; your soul ACHES to give and help. But then you remember what society has planted in your brain "dont give them anything they might buy drugs" or you remember all those Criminal Minds episodes and you just can't. Us Christians pride ourselves in spreading the gospel, we go on all these church events to feed and clothe the homeless. But then go home and the very next day when you are by yourself you don't even bother to smile at them. You are not spreading the gospel at all, all you are doing is trying to satisfy yourself with your personal good deeds. Jesus is the gospel, and like I said we are made in His like-hood, we are also the walking gospel. I believe the gospel isn't even done, it hasn't been finished yet and we are still writing it. And we aren't doing such a great job at it. In Galatians 3:28 is states:
"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for  you are all one in Christ Jesus."

I want you to pay close attention to "neither slave nor free" you might think "Yeah sure slavery" maybe even think outside the box and you'll think "Oh! Black and white people cool! Jesus isn't racist, awesome." But I want you to think even more outside the box! I believe that by "slaves" it didn't just mean literal slavery. I think it meant slavery to society. A homeless person is a slave to the streets, many are slaves to drugs and prostitution. Not just the homeless, but those secret slaves like that one Christian boy that is a slave to pornography and that one girl who is a slave to her abusive boyfriend. We try our best to turn the other way when people are hurting. These people who are slaves to society are no different than you and me. Just because they don't have it all together and don't go to charity events, remember: "for you are all one in Jesus Christ". Make it your duty to spread the gospel, the true gospel. Spread light everywhere you go. You can change the world

The girls behind the blog!

This is about us; the girls behind the blog.

Welcome everyone! This is definitely something new and exciting we are doing, a blog! We are definitely not your typical blogger girls but when you need and want to share the good news that is Jesus Christ in this century, social media seems to be the way to go! Plus writing is so much fun and writing with your best friend? well that is just the icing on the cake. So this is us:

I am Diana (no nickname for me). I love food, actually the word love is sort of an understatement. I am quite shy around brand new people (they sort of scare me lol). I am a lover of my saviour Jesus and of all His wonders. I prefer to stay in my bed than go out and I can last years without painting my nails (I know I know, I'm bad). I seriously dislike coffee, I'm a tea girl for sure. If I could live in a farm full of animals and 120 puppies I would, but my boyfriend says that's a no no. Which leads to another fact that I am in a relationship with an amazing Godly man for 2 1/2 year now. I have slight shopping addiction, everyone says it's major but they don't know what they are talking about. My obsession for cake out of this world.

Now to the other half and how we started this friendship:

My name is Michelle (but everyone calls me Michy) and I'm a psychology major who loves Jesus, loves to bake all kinds of goodies, and absolutely loves coffee way more than it's recommended. I usually make a lot of jokes, some of which may or may not be funny, but that's just who I am. I definitely have an artistic side, I love to sing, I was even in school choirs and a worship team at a church I attended. I also love to paint; I was in a few school art shows. Music is my safe haven on those crazy days.
I love a good laugh and good company; which is why I have to tell you the story of how my best friend Diana and I met.  It really goes to show how different we really are, but I wouldn't have it any other way. To make the story short, I met Diana at church when she first arrived to Canada from Florida (we were both 15! so little). Me being my very outgoing and hyper self-approached the very reserved and not easily approachable Diana, and well...I'm pretty sure she thought I was the most annoying person on this planet. But hey look at us now. Closer than ever and going strong. In the end, I think that you don't have to be the exact same to be friends. And a little variety is always good. Something that Diana and I share is our love for Jesus, that's something we can agree on. That and cake.
P.S. The name of the blog came from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.  Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?  Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

And with that, I hope you enjoy our little letters to life on this blog.
